OPENHEART, 2000
Mapi Rivera
The series of images "Acorazonabierto" reflects the opening gesture of the heart. This cordial center is shaped like an eye. Inside there are feathers that convey a feeling of lightness, flight and liberation. Opening the eye of the heart implies freeing oneself from the exoteric gaze, to be diluted in the perception of a fluid, light and mysterious world.
In the Sufi mystical tradition, it is believed that in order to "see" with the inner eye it is necessary to tear or blind the outer eye. "I am blind for your love, I have become seer for you," says the Sufi hadith. The following story from a blind sage from the Ogalalla Sioux tribe tells how in order to "see", a purified heart is essential, in this way it is possible to contain the universe in the "bag of the heart."
I am blind and do not see the things of this world; but when the Light comes from Above, it illuminates my heart and I can see, because the Eye of my heart (Chante Ishta) sees all things. The heart is a sanctuary in the center of which there is a small space in which the Great Spirit (Wakan Tanka) dwells, and this is the Eye. This is the Eye of the Great Spirit through which He sees everything, and through which we see Him. When the heart is not pure, the Great Spirit cannot be seen, and if you have to die in this ignorance your soul will not be able to return immediately to the Great Spirit, but must be purified by pilgrimages through the Cosmos. To know the center of the heart where the Great Spirit resides, you must be pure and good and live according to the way that the Great Spirit has taught us. The human being who, in this way, is pure, contains the universe in the bag of his heart (Chante Ognaka).
